Hand-Decorated Quilt Project Journals

Journals

People watching the first lesson of my Quilter's Palette class noticed -- and commented on -- these really cool, hand-decorated journals.

I've been making and using these journals for years. I hand-decorate the journals with the best papers and charms that I've collected in my travels. A little piece of me goes into each journal I make.

Some journals have graph paper pages and others have simple lined paper pages. Every one of them is a unique creation. No two are ever the same.

putting fabric in journal

I suggest using these journals as a method of keeping a permanent record of each of your quilting projects. I will insert the fabric amounts for my quilt and any changes to the design that I want to make to personalize my quilt project. I fill it with sketches of the quilting I may want to use on the finished piece.

I usually use one journal per project. I include fabric swatches from all of the fabrics I use in my quilt.

By gluing the swatches into the book, I have a portable palette of my fabrics that I can take to stores and compare other possible fabrics I may want to include. In the journal, I include notes about my quilt project.

finished journal

But the project journal is much more than a keeper of swatches and dimensions and designs. During the time I'm working on that quilt, the journal holds my personal thoughts and ideas. I explain the meaning of the elements I include in the quilt. I also write thoughts and feelings describing what's going on in my life while I'm making the quilt. The journal becomes a record of my journey with a particular project.

Usually, I only offer these one-of-a-kind journals at quilt markets, lectures, and workshops but now I am offering them to you - my online audience as well.

Please take a moment to browse the selection below. As I said, each journal is unique. There is only one each available. I can decorate the same theme into the journal, but most likely it will have different paper or charms or lettering - so keep that in mind.

design

This is a design journal in the truest sense of the word. Firstly, it has the word "design" written on the cover of the 80 page journal. The "g" is a little out of place - a way to remind the designer to make room for everything she wants to put into her work ahead of time. Secondly. this is the type of journal I use as a quilting journal.
